What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit word “Ayur” which means life and “Veda” meaning science or knowledge. It is defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary, as a form of alternative medicine that is the traditional system of medicine of India and seeks to treat and integrate body, mind, and spirit using a comprehensive holistic approach especially by emphasizing diet, herbal remedies, exercise, meditation, breathing, and physical therapy.
Ayurveda recognizes these five natural elements – Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth are the building blocks of all material existence in the universe. These elements combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies, called doshas – Pita, Vata, and Kapha. The manifestation of these elements through the doshas is what gives rise to our uniqueness. Take the dosha test here.
